Fujifilm X-M5

I recently had the opportunity to test the Fujifilm X-M5. Fujifilm was kind enough to send one for me try out. This compact mirrorless camera, aimed at entry-level users and content creators, opened my eyes to a unique Fujifilm experience.

Using the X-M5 felt like wielding an iPhone’s camera without the phone and apps – intuitive, yet packed with features that surprised and delighted me at every turn. On the other hand, the X-M5 felt like a compact professional camera with great features albeting with missing parts, which made the experience a little incomplete.

A Compact Powerhouse

The first thing that struck me about the X-M5 was its size. At just 355g (including battery and memory card), it’s incredibly lightweight and compact. This portability is a game-changer for content creators always on the move. It easily slipped into my jacket pocket, making it an ideal companion for everyday shooting and travel.

Despite its small stature, the X-M5 doesn’t skimp on features. It houses a 26.1-megapixel X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and the latest X-Processor 5, the same combination found in higher-end Fujifilm models. This powerful duo ensures excellent image quality and fast processing, rivaling what you’d expect from much larger cameras.

Film Simulations: A Creative Playground

One of the most surprising and enjoyable aspects of using the X-M5 was discovering Fujifilm’s infamous Film Simulation modes. The X-M5’s Film Simulation dial, offering 20 different looks including classics like Velvia and Acros, was a revelation for someone used to doing most color work in post-processing.

These simulations aren’t just simple filters; they’re meticulously crafted to emulate the characteristics of various film stocks. I found myself spending less time in editing software and more time experimenting with different simulations in-camera. For a content creator always on the go, this feature alone could be a significant time-saver and creative tool.

Intuitive Interface for Content Creators

The X-M5’s interface felt surprisingly intuitive, even as a Fujifilm newcomer. The dedicated Film Simulation dial and the customizable front command dial made accessing key features quick and easy. The vari-angle touchscreen LCD was bright and responsive, making it easy to compose shots and navigate menus.

One standout feature for content creators is the new vertical video mode. This 9:16 format recording option is perfect for creating content for platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels without the need to rotate the camera. As someone who frequently creates content for social media, this feature streamlines the workflow considerably. Of course, nothing beats having a feature where you can do open-gate shooting, but that is often available on devices with a heftier price. Lens and sensors also play a vital role in this aspect. While you get the flexibility of using other X mount lenses, you’re pretty limited with its crop sensor.

Impressive Video Capabilities

The X-M5’s video performance is impressive for a camera in this price range. It can record 6.2K/30p 4:2:2 10-bit video internally, which opens up a world of possibilities for content creators. The ability to shoot 4K/60p and 1080/240p for slow-motion footage adds to its versatility as a video tool.

The X-M5 also introduces a new audio recording feature with three built-in microphones. This allows for directional audio capture, which can be a game-changer for vloggers and run-and-gun filmmakers. While it may not match the advanced audio options of higher-end cameras, it’s more than capable for most content creation needs.

Autofocus and Subject Detection

The X-M5’s autofocus system is another pleasant surprise. Fujifilm has implemented its latest AI-powered subject detection, capable of recognizing and tracking faces, eyes, animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, and even insects. In various shooting scenarios, it performed admirably, keeping subjects sharp and in focus.

The eye and face detection, in particular, worked well for portrait and vlogging situations. For content creators who frequently film themselves, this reliable AF performance is crucial.

A Gateway to the Fujifilm Ecosystem

As someone new to the Fujifilm system, the X-M5 served as an excellent introduction to what the brand has to offer. It provides a taste of Fujifilm’s color science, ergonomics, and feature set without the intimidation factor of their higher-end models.

The X-Mount lens system offers a good selection of high-quality glass. I was particularly impressed with the compact XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ kit lens, which paired perfectly with the X-M5’s small body.

For those considering a switch to Fujifilm or looking to add a second system to their kit, the X-M5 represents an affordable entry point. It allows you to experience Fujifilm’s unique approach to imaging without a significant financial commitment.

Room for Improvement

While the X-M5 impressed me in many ways, there are a few areas where it could be improved. The lack of an electronic viewfinder (EVF) was the most noticeable omission. As someone who frequently shoots in bright conditions, relying solely on the LCD screen for composition took some getting used to.

Another feature I missed was in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The X-M5 relies on lens-based optical stabilization and digital stabilization for video, which, while effective, doesn’t quite match the versatility of IBIS.

Fujifilm X-M5 is a Capable Contender for Content Creators

After spending time with the Fujifilm X-M5, I can say it’s a capable and enjoyable camera that offers excellent value for money. Its compact size, intuitive interface, and powerful features make it an attractive option for content creators and enthusiasts alike.

The X-M5 has earned a place in my kit as a lightweight, everyday carry camera. Its Film Simulation modes and straightforward approach to in-camera creativity have rekindled my enthusiasm for spontaneous shooting.

For those looking to dip their toes into the Fujifilm ecosystem or seeking a capable, portable camera for content creation, the X-M5 is definitely worth considering. It offers a unique shooting experience that combines the immediacy of smartphone photography with the quality and control of a dedicated camera system.

The X-M5 proves that good things indeed come in small packages. It’s a camera that not only meets the demands of modern content creation but also inspires creativity with its unique features and approachable design. For anyone looking to upgrade their content game or simply explore photography in a new way, the Fujifilm X-M5 offers an exciting and rewarding experience.

The Fujifilm X-M5 is now available in the Philippines for PhP58,990 with included XC 15-45mm kit lens.
