Canon has recently introduced the newest member of its EOS M lineup of mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses, the EOS M5.
The M5 boasts a sleek and lightweight body, and sports a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor at its core. It features the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system which allows it to have the fastest AF performance to date among the EOS lineup. 24.2 million phase-difference sensors ensure that phase-difference AF can be achieved in almost the entire view area, allowing users to have more flexibility in framing various scenes.
Another first in the M5 is the predictive AF technology, which enables high precision tracking of a subject’s movements. As compared to older AF systems which only tracks movement in the four basic directions, this new and enhanced system can track a subject as it moves closer to/further from the camera by analyzing the subject’s movement and speed, and then adjusts itself automatically to maintain focus. The M5 is also capable of shooting with continuous AF at approximately 7fps, or up to 9fps when the focus is locked. This ensures that important moments are captured even at high speed.
The DIGIC 7 processor supports a more dynamic AF system for tracking of several subjects at the same time as they move around the frame. The system also supports a smaller AF frame size, allowing focus on very fine details.
The image correction capabilities of the processor also allows for a high level of clarity and optimal brightness as well as contrast when shooting smaller apertures. Loss of detail is also minimized thanks to diffraction correction.
New to the EOS M lineup, the panning function lets users shoot fast moving objects while panning to keep the subject in view. The processor maintains focus on the subject while giving the background a motion blur effect.
The M5 is equipped with a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) which uses high-resolution OLED with approximately 2.36 million dots. It reflects an accurate image of what can be seen by the sensor without glare.
A 3.2-inch high-resolution LCD touchscreen tilts up to 85 degrees upwards and 180 degrees downwards, allowing flexibility for creative shots as well as selfies. Users can also take advantage of the Touch and Drag AF function, which lets the user look into the EVF and change the focus areas using the touchscreen. This function can be toggled on/off using a dedicated button.
The M5 has 5-axis image stabilization for countering camera movement and reducing shake when shooting from unstable positions or when moving, and can also record videos at Full HD 60p, which is twice the framerate of other EOS M cameras. What’s more, users can make adjustments to a raw image immediately after taking the shot without having to use a computer.
For connectivity, the M5 can connect to other devices using Wi-Fi and NFC technlogy via Canon Image Gateway. Once connected, users gain access to some nifty features such as file transfer, social media services, and cloud storage. A smart device can also be used to shoot remotely and control real-time camera settings like shutter speed, focus selection, self-timer, and more. Remote shooting can also be done via Bluetooth.
EF-M18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM
The new EF-M18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM boasts an 8.3x high zoom ratio, which makes it an excellent choice for wide-angle landscapes to telephoto shots of distant subjects. The versatility of the zoom range makes it ideal for entry-level photographers and enthusiasts alike. The advanced design is also compatible with the M5’s combination IS and panning capabilities.
The EOS M5 is also compatible with many other M-series lenses, and a mount-adapter will also make it compatible with over 70 EF/EF-S lenses.
