The HDMI Forum has just announced details of the upcoming HDMI 2.1 specification, which includes the following features:
- Support for higher video resolutions and refresh rates including 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 120Hz, to ensure smoother details and a more immersive experience.
- Dynamic HDR, which ensures that videos are played at ideal settings including depth, detail, brightness, contrast, and wider color gamuts.
- 48G cables which are backward compatible with earlier versions of the specification, and allows up to 48Gbps of bandwidth for HDMI 2.1 features such as 8K video with HDR.
- eARC, which enables audio signal control features such as device auto-detect and supports advanced audio formats.
- Variable refresh rates courtesy of Game Mode VRR, which enables more fluid and detailed gameplay for less or zero lag, stutter, and visual tearing.
The HDMI 2.1 specification will be officially available for all HDMI 2.0 adopters in Q2 of 2017.
