After all the rumors, teasers, and everything else, OPPO has finally unveiled its newest camera technology at MWC. 5x Dual Camera Zoom which captures images at a level of quality that is comparable to digital cameras.
So how were they able to do it? well, it’s actually a complete re-design of the typical dual camera systems which are only capable of 2x zoom.
It’s something they call periscope style dual cameras, wherein the angle of the telephoto lens is actually shifted by 90°, giving it enough space for deep zoom, and therefore allows the smartphone to have a thinner form factor. To be exact, the entire module measures about 5.7mm, which is 10% thinner than a typical lens with 2x optical zoom.
They also explained that the reason why zoomed in images are blurry is because OIS is incorporated on the wide angle lens. So in the new setup, the stabilization has been equipped directly to the telephoto lens to ensure that images retain clarity and detail even at 5x zoom.
The Optical Prism is also a core component of OPPO’s new camera technology, with the main purpose of providing a path for the light which enters the camera. When zooming in, its primary job is to channel the image through the telephoto lens.
Along with the 5x Dual Camera Zoom comes a unique and effective approach to Optical Image Stabilization, which is achieved by allowing both the telephoto lens and the prism to intelligently detect any form of vibration, which in turn prevents blurry images when zooming in.
In general, the new system provides a 40% increase in camera performance compared to previous generations, and we can’t help but wonder what amazing devices this technology is bound to go in to.
