Save for the premium line-up of Samsung, Apple and Microsoft, attempts at making inroads in the tablet space are few far and between. Which is why news on the launch of the Huawei MediaPad M5 is a breath of fresh air, especially for Android-based tablets.

Huawei is on-trend as it releases the tablet in two sizes: 8.4″ and 10.8″. Both screens feature In-panel switching technology with 2,560 x 1600 pixel resolution. And a first for tablets, the MediaPad M5 uses 2.5D glass which means the screen bleeds to the edges over a little, skimming the sides of its metal unibody for additional protection and premium feel.

The main difference between the two models, besides the battery and screen size is the inclusion of a keyboard and Harman Kardon speakers to the 10.8″ model. The smaller model only includes stereo speakers.

The MediaPad M5 runs on Android 8.0 and is powered by the same chipset found in its flagship phones.  4GB of ram comes standard as well as options for 32GB, 64GB or 128GB storage. Battery-wise, the smaller variant has a 5,100mAh Li-Po capacity while its big brother has 7,500mAh. Both support fast charging  using USB-C, which takes just under 2 hours to fully charge the small one tablet and just under 3 hours for the bigger one.

As for the prices, were looking at a range of €350 to 500 (P22,000 to 32,000) for the 8.4″ and €400 to 550 (P25,000 to 35,000) for the 10.8″ variant.

A bit too much for the likes of Huawei? Stay tuned.
