Who would have thought that Huawei would further compete in the budget category with a smartphone tucked with an impressive set of specification and features? This is our unboxing of the Huawei Y6 (2018)!

At the time of this posting, Huawei has not yet given us the retail price of the Huawei Y6 (2018). Apart from the smartphone, the box includes a charger, a micro USB cable and a SIM ejector tool. Surprisingly, we didn’t see any included earphones, but Huawei confirmed that it’s part of the retail box.

Update (April 17, 2018): Huawei just announced that Huawei Y6 (2018) is just PhP5,990!

Huawei Y6’s design is similar. For a budget smartphone, this phone does definitely not look like one. It slightly resembles the Huawei Nova 2 Lite, albeit lacks the fingerprint sensor, 3 camera systems, Kirin chipset and a few other hardware stuff. This is perhaps another way of Huawei of capturing another piece of the market segment that’s between budget and low midrange. From the looks of it, it looks more like a midrange than a budget smartphone.

Here’s a quick comparison between the Y6 and the Nova 2 Lite.

There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top of the phone. The tri-cut sim tray is located at the left side. The sleep/wake button and volume rockers are conveniently placed on its right side. At the button, you will find the micro USB port and speaker grills.

The phone sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, PDAF and LED flash. The camera in front is 5 megapixels with f/2.2 aperture and selfie toning flash. Unlike Huawei Nova 2 Lite, I have not seen any ways to take photos with AR effects on, but that’s probably something that they can add on via a software patch.

We will take sample photos using the cameras of this smartphone, which we will upload to our blog, Facebook, and Instagram pages.

The phone is powered by a relatively inferior chipset compared to Nova 2 Lite, with an octa-core processor speed of 1.4GHz. It has 2GB RAM and Andreno 308 GPU. If you’re going to play GPU-intensive games such PUBG Mobile or Rules of Survival, expect to play at lowest graphics settings. It’s good to note that this device’s SoC specifications put it in the same league as Xiaomi Redmi 4A, Samsung Galaxy J2 Pro and Moto E4.

Huawei Y8 runs on the latest Android version (8.0) and EMUI 8.0. The software doesn’t have much bloat, but Huawei made sure that they tucked in important features on the Y8. This one has face unlock and even a ‘Ride Mode’, which basically changes the UI and accessibility of the software to make it driver or rider friendly. In this mode, all calls and messages will automatically be answered with a preset message.
