While mostly known for devices with a very competitive specs to price ratio, Xiaomi seems to be also working on the side on some interesting new tech. A good example is a recent demonstration of what could be the next generation of under display fingerprint scanners.

Xiaomi’s President and Co-Founder Lin Bin recently posted a video on his Weibo account to show how the technology works. Using what seems to be a protoype device, he registered his fingerprint and unlocked the device with just one tap. The catch? it now works regardless of where you tap on the screen. It also seems to be faster and more responsive.

According to him, the unlocking are has been expanded to more than five times the usual, and 15 times that of your standard scanners at the back panel. He also mentioned that if this innovation receives great feedback from fans (which we bet it will), they’ll probably consider placing it in future devices.

In display fingerprint scanners have already made their way into a number of devices – The Huawei Mate 20 Pro, The Vivo V11, and even the recent OPPO R17 Pro are just a few. But all of them are just a bit too slow, and scanning is restricted to only one section of the screen.
