Five to ten years ago, a lot of people used to think that folding devices were just going to be concepts, and were virtually impossible to make. And today, Samsung has once again stepped up its game, and has made that, a reality. Meet the new Samsung Galaxy Fold, a masterpiece defines a new category of mobile devices.
The Galaxy Fold is designed to deliver a totally new user experience, allowing users to do things they couldn’t with just an ordinary smartphone. Eight years in the making, Galaxy Fold brings together various innovations – from the materials, the engineering and the display, following the debut of a prototype back in 2011.
The device features a 7.3” QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED main display, and 4.6” HD+ Super AMOLED cover display. Samsung actually invented a new polymer layer and created a display around 50 percent thinner than what you’ll find in your typical smartphone display. This new material makes the device both flexible and tough at the same time.
A new Hinging Mechanism lets the Galaxy Fold opens smoothly and naturally. The fingerprint sensor is located on the side, where the thumb naturally lands. Even the batteries and other components inside are evenly distributed, for a balanced feel when using the device.
Powering the Galaxy Fold is a 7nm 64-bit Octa-core processor, backed by 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. You also get a 4,380mAh battery, compatible with both wired and wireless fast charging technologies.
It runs on a specially designed UI on top of Android Pie, which introduces features like Multi-Active Window which allows you to open three active apps on the main display. That means you can surf, work, watch, and text without losing track. There’s also App Continuity, which allows for seamless transition between the cover and the main displays. That means you can leave your apps as is, fold and open the device, and come back to them in the same state they were in when you left them.
For imaging, the Galaxy Fold is equipped with a triple rear camera system, a 16MP ultra wide, 12MP wide-angle, and another 12MP telephoto snapper, backed with PDAF, OIS, and up to 2x optical zoom. It also boasts Dual Pixel Auto-Focus, and Dual Aperture mode (f/1.5/f/2.4). The device also boasts a dual front camera system (10MP + 8MP). Unique to the Fold, is a fifth camera located on the cover for selfies.
Finally, the Galaxy Fold also comes with exclusive features such as Samsung DeX compatibility for a full desktop experience, Bixby, and Samsung Knox to keep your data secure.
