Microsoft has just announced the latest devices to join the Surface family – the Surface Laptop Go and the refreshed Surface Pro X.
Surface Laptop Go
The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is a budget-friendly variant of the Surface series and uses aluminum for the lid and polycarbonate composite resin system with glass fiber, and 30% post-consumer recycled content for its base. It’s got a 12.4-inch touchscreen display with 1536×1024 resolution.
Under the hood is a 10th Generation Intel Core i5-1035G1 processor coupled with 4GB/8GB LPDDR4X RAM and a 64GB eMMC or 128/256GB SSD storage. It has Intel UHD Graphics on board.
There’s also a 720p f/2.0 webcam, dual far-field microphones, and speakers with Dolby Audio processing. It will come with Windows 10 Home in S mode.
Surface Laptop Go is priced at USD 550 for 4GB of RAM and 64GB eMMC storage, USD 700 for 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, and USD 900 for 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.
Surface Pro X
The Microsoft Surface Pro X, on the other hand, is a refreshed version of last year’s model.
It is a 13-inch ARM-based Windows tablet with a 2880×1920 resolution. This is said to be the company’s thinnest Surface Pro while still keeping the kickstand.
The tablet is powered by two custom chipsets namely the Microsoft SQ 1 and the new SQ 2 made by Qualcomm. The details on the chipsets weren’t announced but it is expected that the SQ 2 is based on the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 since the SQ 1 was based on the Snapdragon 8cx. This is backed by the GPU with the SQ 2 featuring the Adreno 690 and the SQ 1 packing the Adreno 685, similar to the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 and 8cx, respectively.
Joining the chipsets are 8GB/16GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128/256/512GB of removable M.2 2230 SSD. The storage can only be removed by a Microsoft technician, however. The company also claims it offers 15 hours of battery life.
In the optics department, the Surface Pro X has a 5MP front camera with 1080p video and a separate camera for Windows Hello face authentication. On the rear, it has a 10MP camera with up to 4K video recording support.
The tablet also has dual far-field microphones and 2W stereo speakers with Dolby Audio.
As far as ports go, it has 2 USB-C ports and a Surface Connect port. It has Gigabit LTE via nanoSIM and eSIM, A-GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and Bluetooth 5.0.
The tablet is compatible with the Surface Pro X keyboard and Surface Slim Pen which are sold separately for USD 104 and 145, respectively. The keyboards are now available in Platinum, Ice Blue, and Poppy Red.
The Surface Pro X will be available in six variants but only two will sport the new Microsoft SQ 2. The two SQ 2 powered have 16GB but will go for USD 1,500 for 256GB storage and USD 1,800 for 512GB storage. These are available for pre-order now and are available in Black or Platinum.
