Tipster Rodent950 has just reported that Huawei’s wholly-owned semiconductor company, HiSilicon is working on the Kirin 9020 chipset which will be made with a 3nm process. His initial tweet mentions the Kirin 9010 but he corrected himself with another tweet stating it will be the 9020 instead.

He further clarifies that the Kirin 9010 is already under development with the 5nm+ process but can’t be produced while the 9020 is also under development with an unknown release date.

The Kirin 9000 chipset debuted alongside the Mate 40 series. The Kirin 9010 is expected to launch with either the P50 or Mate 50 series if it does make it out. This means that the Kirin 9020 could be expected for 2022 with either the P60 series or Mate 60 series packing the new chip, assuming it does make it out.

HiSilicon is a fabless semiconductor company that relies on what TSMC can provide but currently, TSMC is banned from shipping chips to Huawei. Because of this, it is uncertain how Huawei will get 3nm chips even if research and development are in place.
