Samsung is facing a shortage in SSD controllers after its factories in Texas have been idle since February due to severe weather conditions, according to a report from DigiTimes.
The Texas foundries are responsible for producing most of the company’s SSD controllers globally. Sources tell DigiTimes that it will impact its products for high-end desktop PCs with up to 75% of its PCIe SSD controller production affected this month. In addition, the report says that the supply issues of Samsung could spill out into the server and mainstream PC markets by April.
The company’s NAND flash memory is not built in Austin but the controllers are vital in getting the hardware to work and thus directly affect its ability to produce SSDs.
The report mentions that Samsung will resume production of the PCIe SSD controllers in April and it expects to resume shipping SSD controllers by May. Although this may seem like only a few months of shortage, it will take a while before the supply chains resume normal operations. This means we could see higher prices months after production has resumed.
