OPPO Reno6 5G: Before You Pre-Order

Contents (maximize to view)

You are perhaps seeing a lot of content creators posting about the OPPO Reno6 5G. In this article, we’ll give you your first look, our first impressions and sample photos to help you become familiar with it before you pre-order. Our full review will be out after August 6 so I highly encourage you to take this article as a preface to it.

What’s Inside the box?

Inside the box of the OPPO Reno6 5G are the following: the phone, a couple of documentations, silicon case, earphones, Type-A to Type-C cable and an ultra-fast 65W SuperVOOC Charge 2.0 charger. The contents of its box are the same compared to OPPO Reno6 Z 5G except for the included charger.

Design and Display

It is interesting to see how the design of the new OPPO Reno6 5G is different from its previous iterations. It has chamfered edges, like the design of the iPhone series. The back panel of the phone also has this very unique look and texture, which looks very appealing to me.

The smartphone does not have 3.5mm input so it’s important for you to note that you won’t be able to use your earphones here on the fly. Thankfully, OPPO included an earphone that is compatible with the phone’s Type C port.

The phone has this sleep and wake button with a green line that is distinct to new OPPO smartphones. You’ve probably seen the same design on previous OPPO Reno and Find X generations.

You’ll find two microphones – one at the top and another one at the bottom. The latter is sandwiched by the SIM tray and Type-C port. The phone also has one speaker grill that is located beside the Type-C port.

The device is very comfortable to hold and grab with just hand. With a phone that looks this good, I believe that you won’t bother putting on its silicon case. The camera bump is a little pronounced, but not as much as other smartphones from other brands.

As for its display, it has a 6.43-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 20:9 aspect ratio. It has 1080 x 2400 pixels resolution with a pixel density of 409. Based on my experience, the colors are on point and contrast levels are near perfect. I have no issues with saturation either.

If you want to beef up your visual experience when watching videos, the phone has a feature called O1 Ultra Vision Engine, which helps in enhancing the colors when viewing standard definition videos. It seemingly adds color depth and layer to videos, which artificially bumps the levels of colors and manages correct saturation.

What powers the smartphone?

The OPPO Reno6 5G is powered by a MediaTek MT7877 Dimensity 900 5G. This fairly new in the smartphone market, and OPPO Reno6 5G is among the first smartphones to have this chipset configuration. Without giving you my full benchmark report, I can say that you can play better with this device without sacrificing some graphics settings. Being a relatively new chipset, MediaTek 900 5G features a better processor configuration than the Snapdragon 765G on the Reno5 5G.

The phone we received has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. OPPO did not seem to change the configuration of the storage as the phone has UFS 2.1 storage, which is similar to the previous iteration.

You have to take into consideration that some games are not yet compatible with this smartphone. We were told that the upcoming Diable Immortal won’t work on both Reno6 5G and Reno6 Z 5G; the same thing with Apex Legends Mobile. I tried to fire the latter, which I downloaded from Google PlayStore but I was told that the phone is not yet included in their supported devices.

How about its camera?

As you can see in the specs above, the camera specification of the OPPO Reno6 5G is almost identical to the one on OPPO Reno5 5G. The only lens that is missing on the Reno6 5G is the one dedicated to depth-sensing, which allows the phone to take portrait photos with a shallow depth of field. It seems that having that specific lens is not needed anymore because it has been replaced with a smarter sensor, which can build artificial bokeh when shooting portraits.

Despite having less number of lens versus the previous generation, the OPPO Reno6 5G proves to be one of the best smartphone cameras available in the market right now. Camera startup is almost instant and essential camera features and modes are available from the get-go. I had no problems taking photos in low light and the default movie mode is perfect for mobile filmmakers. We’ll try to cover as much as we could when we post our full review soon.

OPPO Reno 6 5G: Our First Impressions

While it is too early to give our full verdict, allow me to give you my initial take on this device. The OPPO Reno6 5G gives users a better 5G experience with its more upgraded chipset. The camera performance remains the same, if not better, despite not missing a lens dedicated to depth sensing. The device is perfect for mobile filmmaking as it incorporates manual settings to provide more flexibility for filmmakers.
