So you got yourself a new drone to document your travels this summer. Your new stop is Boracay for a full week, and you thought that bringing your drone will upgrade your documenting game by showing how you enjoyed the scenic views and all the stuff you enjoyed with your friends or family. Then you realized you cannot use it unless you have the permit to fly it in Boracay. According to a friend’s connection, Joel Andrada, “Malay LGU has a municipal ordinance. You need to secure a permit to fly. And you are only allowed to fly outside the 10km radius from the nearest airport which means drones can’t fly over the famous White Beach. CAAP Licensed Pilots are sometimes allowed as long as cleared with LGU.” Based on what he said, CAAP License does not automatically give you the clearance to fly your drone, so it’s safe to…

Let me tell you straight that this isn’t an article with political nature. This is neither about Huawei’s case against the US government about production ban, nor the company’s willingness to sell 5G chip to their rival company, Apple. This is all about the inspirations they took and their efforts to disrupt certain ways of doing things for the sake of innovation and progress. I had the chance to exclusively meet and interview Mr. George Li, Country Manager of Huawei Consumer Business Group Philippines and Mr. Peter Guaden, Global Product Marketing Manager of Huawei Technologies during the official launch of Huawei P30 series in the Philippines. We talked about a number of things specific to Huawei, the products they launched and their future in the Philippines. Little did I expect that the interview will lead to new discoveries about Huawei and a renewed appreciation of the brand’s effort to reach…

If you fancy looking for a new high-powered gaming router, there’s one that we can recommend and it might just be the most future proof one available in the market today. This is the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000, the first WiFi 6 IEEE 802.11ax router by ASUS and the first one launched in the Philippines by any consumer technology brand. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill gaming router and never dare call it a minor upgrade to ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 as it stacks several new features apart from being an IEE 802.11ax certified router. Yes, the latter is a big deal and talk more about it later, but there are several upgrades under the hood that you should be aware of before buying one. Just so you know, vesting an award to a particular product is tricky. There are various reasons to consider on both technical and consumer side. ASUS ROG Rapture…

Spotted at 2019 Smart City Summit and Expo, this Smart Mike+ by Sabinetek records stereo audio and compatible with iOS and Android. While this one looks like your run-of-the-mill Bluetooth headphones with mic, this device is built solely for recording purposes. You can record up to 15m despite its lightweight build at 8 grams and design. It works perfectly during the demo but there is also a dedicated application if you wish to maximize its functions. As for its specifications, it records stereo quality recording and has 2 microphones, including adaptive noise suppression. I never got the chance to test it further, but we were told by Sabinetek that they are willing to send a test unit for our review. We missed their booth during our visit at CES 2019, but I saw a video demo by EMT. Check it out below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0tRx3xPvik Our thoughts: it’s great for content creators.…

This week, I was treated to a technological spectacle at 2019 Smart City Summit and Expo in Taipei, Taiwan. For 6 years, the summit showcases several working solutions to make the world a smarter place to live in. What better way to do it than hold the expo in a city like Taipei where technology flourishes and makes up a huge chunk of their GDP. Taipei is about 43% the size of Metro Manila, and yet its GDP is 300% bigger. I got the chance to check around the booths at the show floor, and boy was I impressed with what Taiwan has got to make their cities a pleasant and technologically-advance to live in. Ranging from eGovernance to Smart Education, Taiwan has got everything covered at 2019 Smart City Summit and Expo. Taiwan showcases readiness for future of education The country is aware of the rising demand of improving the…

I am often asked by friends which travel Wi-Fi I recommend when going abroad. I’ve got only 3 brands in mind, but among those brands, only one caught my attention for a service that they excel at – cloud SIM card. So far, Big Sky offers this type of service, and it proved to be a more reliable alternative to a SIM-based travel Wi-Fi we have used in the past. However, this isn’t the only reason why we will considering getting Big Sky Nation again when we travel abroad. Here are 6 more reasons: They are the supplier of Smart Travel Wi-Fi This came as a surprise for me when I was contacted by Louise de Guzman of Big Sky Nation. According to them, they are also the provider of Smart, for Smart Travel Wi-Fi. The latter is powered by Skyroam, and it uses their patented vSIM technology, that works…

We are subscribed to both PLDT Home Fibr and Converge ICT Solutions at our HQ. We enjoy the benefits of the points they are good at: PLDT for speed consistency and reliability; and Converge for better latency when playing games . Each company has its own strengths and weaknesses, but Converge has been gaining ground lately as they are seen by some Filipinos as the supposed redeemer in the state of internet connection in the Philippines. Things got pretty intense when consumers started complaining about frequent disconnections and speed inconsistencies. As one of the commenters at Outage Report said, “Victims of their own success? Now competing with Globe & PLDT on metrics that they should have been trying to use as differentiators, like ‘Poor Customer Service’, ‘Lack of transparency’, ‘Downtime Percentage’, ‘Customer Avoidance’, ‘Unplanned Maintenance’…”. We hope not. At the time of this writing, Converge received 125 reports, originating from…

Prior to the launch of the Mate 20 series, Huawei made an earlier announcement regarding its newest processor, the Kirin 980, which promises a ton of improvements over its predecessor, which by the way, wasn’t a slouch in any way. Built for Performance and Efficiency The Kirin 980 is the world’s first mobile processor to be built on a 7nm chip; that’s 6.9 billion transistors in a less than 1 square centimeter. Versus its predecessor, it promises to improve single core performance by up to 75%, and is the first to use the Mali-G76 GPU, which offers up to 46% improvement in graphics performance. What good is a fast and capable processor if it eats up a ton of power, right? Huawei once again pushed the limits to make the Kirin 980 as efficient as it could be. In fact, it offers up to 58% improved overall power efficiency, which…

It was not a long time ago when we posted our review of the OPPO F7. The OPPO F7 is definitely a phone to look out for in its price range. It offers a ton of improvements in many aspects over its predecessor – from its new design to a significant improvement in performance; to the refined cameras; and, the new features included in the software. The OPPO F7 is still quite rough in some of the edges though – the software needs further optimization, camera focusing speed, as well as raw shooting speed is in need of some re-work. I also wished that they’d already move on to a Type-C port, and the absence of an LED notification light, is just plain mystifying, for a feature that’s very basic, but is also very essential. OPPO has made a huge leap here. And if they can address at least some of…

Every now and then, we come across with headphones that are positioned primarily for gamers. Logitech, Corsair, HyperX,  Sennheiser and ASUS Republic of Gamers have been pretty successful in establishing their gaming headphones to their target consumers. Who is 1More? A relatively new brand, 1More, has been trying to take a piece of the pie, and has been pretty successful in doing so. For the uninitiated, 1More is a brand that’s closely related to a much bigger brand, Xiaomi. In 2014, 3 former Foxconn executives founded the audio company to challenge Apple Inc.’s audio unit, Beats Electronics LLC. Thanks to a huge chunk of investment from Xiaomi Corp. 4 years later, the brand officially arrived in the Philippines thru Quantum Mobile Gears. 1More Spearhead VR is one of the new products that they introduced this year at CES. It isn’t shy of features geared for gamers, and has everything it takes…

Power banks usually don’t look special. The same thing goes with clip-on car mounts! Time and again, brands have been trying to improve the designs of power banks, and even tried adding a few quirks and special features to upscale its attractiveness level. One of the brands that try to innovate and pump the features of their products is Baseus, a Chinese brand of cases and power banks in the  Philippines. They recently forged a retail partnership with Digits Trading to make their slew of products available in the country. Not Your Ordinary Power Bank I own and keep 8 power banks. I’ve got portable power juices from Tronsmart, Pyxis, Anker, ASUS and Xiaomi, to name a few. Among all the ones I’ve got, the charger from Baseus stands out for a lot of reasons. What we’ve got is the Baseus Bracket Wireless Powerbank 8000mAh. For starters, while it looks like…
