The first impression with the the Fitbit HR was all held in anticipation of how I slept the night before. Naturally, I prepped myself to sleep early so that I can get “quality sleep” to register. So it did, showing how many times I was “Awake”, the duration I was in REM stage, Light Sleep stage and Deep Sleep stage. That’s for a night’s sleep. How about going a few weeks wearing it? Does it encourage us to sleep more and yes, move more just like how activity trackers gamified fitness? Let’s find out. Design: Take away the straps, the Fitbit HR looks almost identical to its predecessor which is a good thing. The differences are subtle, such as the inclusion of the barely imperceptible fitbit branding at the bottom of the screen. The sides are just the same, elegantly showing the fusion of the screen with the brushed metal…

Streaming has always been very close to my heart. Ever since I started streaming a year ago, I’ve devoted myself to improving my stream. Hooked myself to a reliable fiber ISP, upgraded my gaming system, bought an HD camera and got myself a good condenser mic. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from over 200 hours of streaming, investing on a good microphone is just as important as having a good gaming computer. A few weeks ago, ASUS sent us a brand new ASUS ROG Strix Magnus, a professional level USB gaming microphone. It is positioned for game streamers, and I wish to know if its features are enough to feed my needs. It has tons of features up its sleeve, and we’re going to review each and every part of it. Let’s go! Unboxing Magnus’ is well kept inside a hard cardboard retail box. The front of the box…

We got our hands on Cherry Mobile’s new entry-level smartphone, the Flare J1 (2017). Let’s dive in on what it has to offer, the good and the bad, and its durable LCD display feature. Design and Build Quality The look and feel of the Cherry Mobile J1 (2017) is basically what you’d expect from a budget smartphone. It doesn’t have any frills or anything that makes it stand out from other phones. It simply has a 5-inch TFT LCD display with thick black bezels on the top and bottom. At the top of the screen, you have the 5MP front-facing camera; and at the bottom, you have the navigation buttons. On the right-hand side of the phone, you have the volume rocker and power button, while on the left there are no buttons placed. At the top is a micro-USB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack, while at the bottom,…

Rejoice fellow Uncharted fans! It seems that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End wasn’t the end. It’s no longer Nathan Drake as the protagonist though but the uber naughty and witty Chloe Frazer.  Yep, she’s back! If the story trailer is any indication, the game is just as action-packed as Nathan Drake’s last four adventures in the Uncharted series. The trailer shows us the signature set pieces, fast-paced action and deep character development that Naughty Dog is known for. There’s a lot of girl-power going in this game as she goes through the adventure with Uncharted 4’s Nadine Ross. That’s 2 good reasons to get this game. From the press release: From critically acclaimed developers Naughty Dog comes the first standalone adventure in UNCHARTED franchise history led by fan-favorite, Chloe Frazer.  In order to recover a fabled ancient Indian artifact and keep it out of the hands of a ruthless war profiteer,…

These days, more and more people are moving to curved ultra-wide monitors for enjoying their content. Whether it be movies, games, or even doing productivity tasks. And now, Philips has come out with their very own offering at this product segment. The Philips BDM349OUC is the company’s latest high-end monitor, sporting a 34-inch curved display with 3440 x 1440 resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, along with a slew of features that can be quite useful for content creators, media consumption junkies, and perhaps even gamers. Design The overall design of this monitor leans toward being a bit more simple and minimalistic, which suggests that it’s made primarily for productivity. There’s a thick gray chin at the bottom, and the bezel size is just about right. At the bottom of the display is a small joystick that you can use to navigate the on-screen display. It’s got good feedback, feels durable, and…

Mixed reality has been growing more traction worldwide. In fact, when I met Josh Vergara of Android Authority this Computex 2017, he said that speculations about the upcoming Pixel 3 having Tango embedded to its system has been going around. In the Philippines, while Filipinos aren’t much familiar with ‘mixed reality’ as a term, virtual reality has been getting popular with the proliferation of VR glasses and Playstation VR. Mixed reality is totally a different animal though, and it might take a while for Filipino consumers to embrace it like virtual reality. Last December 2016, I got the chance to interview Chris Misola, a pioneer in mixed reality app development scene in the Philippines, about the present and future of mixed reality in the Philippines. The future is bright, but it requires great amount of effort to promote it down to the consumer level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Fg4fq3KiKE Microsoft Hololens is expensive, and…

Mechanical keyboards are everywhere, but only a few stand out. A couple of months ago, I got the chance to use and review the metal-clad ASUS ROG Claymore + Core. It is amazing in many ways – without being exaggerated – albeit too big and little pricey for some consumers. Enter ASUS Sagaris – an entry-level fully featured RGB mechanical keyboard. It isn’t the direct answer to the ASUS ROG Claymore, but it sure is filled with features, which are enough to send gamers to ASUS retailers to get one. There are plenty of reasons to get an ASUS Sagaris. For one, it’s built to withstand the test of time. More than the classic yet appealing look of its aluminum chassis, Sagaris is ready for the beating inside and out. The overall design is robust-looking, just enough to connote durability. Its cables are braided as well, but I’m a little…

Sony just released its presentation for their 2017 Corporate Strategy Meeting and revealed numbers that’ll make your eyes pop. For starters, Sony estimates close to 80 million PS4 units cumulatively by the end of 2017. With just 4 years after launch, the PS4 already sold more than half of the estimated sales of the PS2 – the console with the longest run at 13 years. Not only that, the monthly “active” users of Playstation Network are now at 70 million. One can surmise that these “active” users at least logged in thru consoles and handhelds that are currently supported, namely the PS VITA, PS3 and the PS4. The fact that they mentioned “active” means its a receptive, captured market that can easily be tapped for any new game or peripheral. Developers will want to churn out quality games too due to the huge gamer base. And to us gamers? With Sony’s…

Our gaming and streaming setup showcase: ASUS ROG Maximus Hero IX + Strix GTX 1070 O8G A few months ago, we ditched our 2-year old desktop setup with a far superior set of components from ASUS Republic of Gamers. It was a complete overhaul, but a worthy investment and upgrade since we wanted to create quality streams and maximize our productivity. Other parts in our upgrade include the following: Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor Corsair Vengeance LED 16gb (2x8gb) DDR4-2666 Memory Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO https://youtu.be/tT_YR5-Jv5o Bulk of our moolah were spent on the main components plus the processor. We had to get ourselves a set of dual-channel RAMs for compatibility purposes. Plus,…

In June last year, Fitbit came out with the Fitbit Alta – one of the sexiest fitness trackers to ever hit the market. We had a blast reviewing the Alta and gave it high marks for looks and performance. As a tracker we knew Fitbit would deliver the basics: count steps when you’re on the move and record the lack of movement as sleep. Did we wish it could do more? To be honest, we did, but we also knew its slender profile couldn’t really hold much hardware. The Alta didn’t have a heart rate (HR) monitor, which means that estimating calorie burn wasn’t as accurate. If you want a HR monitor, you’ll have to purchase it’s big brother, the Charge HR. The Fitbit Alta is a stylish, basic fitness tracker done right . Now if only… Fast forward ten months later, imagine my surprise when they announced the launch…

A display that is ready to slay Whether you’re into playing games or creating content, owning a display is just as important as having a powerful rig. The growth of gaming community in the Philipines brought forth an onset of confidence by brands to bring in performance displays such as the ASUS ROG Swift PG248Q. The ASUS ROG Swift PG248Q is positioned as an eSports Gaming monitor. It sports a 24-inch twisted nematic (TN) panel that is capable of delivering 1ms response time. Such as an important factor in eSports since a slight deviation on response time from actual input can be devastating in a game like DOTA 2, LOL, Overwatch and even fighting games. Build, Construction and Specifications Consistent to the design philosophy of ROG, PG248Q is designed to please gamers with its ergonomic and mayan inspired design. The matte textured panels of the monitor can be a bit…

78% of our readers at Gadget Pilipinas is part of the millennial generation. 35% of our country is part of a generational group that’s 15-34. It is also the generation, which is often negatively stereotyped: impatient, entitled, “narcissistic”, etc. Why is it that the generation that is expected to propel the country’s workforce and the economy seemed to have such negative dispositions and values? Are we soon going the lead by a generation that only think of themselves? This same stereotype and myths are being challenged by the country’s forward-looking fintech, PayMaya, through their latest #NowNation campaign. The latter, which they aptly called “Millennials Beyond the Selfie” has a specific goal of dispelling the negative connotations about the said generation, and eventually uplift and empower the young Filipinos in order to unwillingly passion their passions while helping the country. According to PayMaya Philippines co-COO Benjie S. Fernandez, “Millennials are often…

Zenfone has been established by ASUS as an iconic sub brand, and they have been really successful doing so. Since the time it was announced last Computex Taiwan 2016, ASUS released a total of 6 variants of Zenfone: Zenfone 3, Zenfone 3 Deluxe, Zenfone 3 Ultra, Zenfone 3 Laser, Zenfone 3 Max, and the Zenfone 3 Zoom. ASUS’ apple of the eye this time is the Zenfone 3 Zoom – a follow-up to last year’s Zenfone Zoom. It sports many similarities to the Zenfone 3, but imbued with tons of improvements especially on the camera and battery departments. https://youtu.be/wMwUn_veik4 Build Let me get this straight: the size and overall design of the Zenfone 3 Zoom (Z3Z) took a lot of inspiration from Zenfone 3. It’s crazy thin for a phone that’s installed with a big-ass battery and overwhelming rad hardware. ASUS ditched putting a rear glass panel on the Z3Z.…
